GSEs completed nearly 60,000 foreclosure prevention actions in Q1 2023: FHFA

Government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs) Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac completed 58,268 foreclosure prevention actions during the first quarter of 2023, raising the total number of homeowners who have been helped to 6,771,101 since the start of conservatorships in September 2008. This is according to the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Q1 2023 Foreclosure Prevention and Refinance Report, which was published late last week.

Single-family serious delinquencies continued to decline in May, however, multi-family serious delinquencies are now increasing. Freddie Mac reported that the Single-Family serious delinquency rate in May was 0.58%, down from 0.61% April. Freddie's rate is down year-over-year from 0.80% in May 2022. This is below the pre-pandemic lows. Freddie's serious delinquency rate peaked in February 2010 at 4.20% following the housing bubble and peaked at 3.17% in August 2020 during the pandemic.
