8 Quick Ways You Haven’t Tried Yet to Make and Save Money

We’ve all done random things to make money, right?

Personally, I’ve written articles, cleaned gutters, mowed lawns, donated plasma and collected scrap metal to earn cash. And when it comes to saving money… well, I’ve had to fool myself into saving any money instead of just spending it all.

If you need money at the moment, have you done everything you can to make and save a bit more cash? Everything? Really?

Simple Moves to Make When You Need Money

Here are a few tricks to try next time you need money.

Automate Your Budget

Most people have tried some kind of budgeting app.  Personal Capital is completely free AND automated.  I like how you get a quick dashboard of your monthly revenue and expenses and also your personal balance sheet.

My favorite part is how it links all your retirement accounts and analyzes your spending for you and compares it to the previous month.  A lot of my friends use this for retirement planning.

Take a Picture of Your Receipts

We know it sounds strange, but Ibotta will pay you cash for taking pictures of your shopping receipts.

Here’s how it works:

Before heading to the store, search for items on your shopping list within the Ibotta app. When you get home, snap a photo of your receipt and scan the items’ barcodes.

Bam. Cash back.

Ibotta is free to download. Plus, you’ll get a $10 sign-up bonus after uploading your first receipt.

Some cash-back opportunities we’ve seen include:

  • 25 cents back for any item.
  • 25 cents back on strawberries.
  • 50 cents back on frozen fruit snacks.
  • $1 back on a box of tea.
  • $5 back on a case of Shiner Bock beer.

Notice a lot of those aren’t tied to a brand — just shop for the staples on your list and earn cash back!

Declutter Your Space

Start taking a good hard look at your belongings. What do you actually need?

  • Clothes: If you have clothes you haven’t worn in the last year, why do you hang onto them? Try selling them to folks in your area through the online marketplace Poshmark. It takes about five minute to list an item, and it’s free.
  • Books: Bookshelf collecting dust? Through Amazon Trade-In, you can trade in your used textbooks, plus other items, like electronics, in exchange for an Amazon gift card.

Turn Your Downtime Into Money-Making Time

There are a ton of scam survey sites – it’s very hard to find a good one.

My favorite is Survey Junkie because it’s mobile-friendly.  Meaning you can do everything from the convenience of your phone.

You probably aren’t going to make a million dollars, but if you want something to do while you are waiting on somebody besides just scrolling news websites and social media, this is the site for you!

Let Someone Borrow Your Place For The Night

This is by far the biggest money you can’t make on the side.  The best part is you don’t have to buy anything to increase your revenue.  If you can’t airbnb your house because of zoning issues or your spouse isn’t on-board – you should manage airbnb’s for others.

There is a lot of communication between hosts and guests and cleaners.  You can easily just get paid a management fee for doing this.

A quick note about VRBO and Booking.com.  These are airbnb’s primary competitors and I have listed my properties with them as well.  However, I would absolutely NOT recommend them.

There websites are extremely clunky and not user-friendly.  Importantly, they don’t drive that many bookings anyway so I definitely don’t think it’s worth the hassle.

Most people working day jobs just have a 401k and that’s it.  I hope you have figured-out this is simply not enough to retire.

My investing has increased exponentially since using RobinHood!  It’s completely free and really easy to use.
