While it might be too late to snap up some of these historic properties outside of Brooklyn, you can still read up on tales of menageries, a time-capsule bar and, of course, rumors of a George Washington visit.

The most popular Upstate listings story for 2022 concerned a house in Rockland County while all the others on the list are located in Westchester County. Click through to read the full list.

5. The Stone House of Somers, Traveling Menagerie Not Included, Yours for $1.6 Million

If only every historic house came with an unusual feature of this Westchester County Greek Revival: a handy carving documenting the year it was built, the original owner and the team of craftsmen involved. Dating to 1849, the house has an impressive stone exterior and a wealth of ornamental plasterwork on the interior.

In Somers, N.Y., the property on the market at 413 Route 202 also has an unexpected connection to the early 19th century traveling menagerie business, a forerunner of the modern circus.

4. Embrace Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian Vision in Westchester County for $1.5 Million

For those whose tastes run to the mid 20th century, the Usonian community in Pleasantville, N.Y., offers a feast of Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired homes nestled in a woodland setting. One of the houses, designed by an architect for his own family, is on the market and offers up an interior filled with the organic materials that Wright espoused.

The house on the market at 6 Bayberry Drive was constructed in 1949 by architect Aaron Resnick as one of the early residences in Pleasantville’s planned Usonian neighborhood.

3. Mix a Cocktail Behind the Bar of This Time-Capsule Mamaroneck Hofbrau, Yours for $1.4 Million

It’s been sealed for decades but carefully maintained, with checkered tablecloths draped over tables, bright stools pulled up to the striking 1930s bar and a vintage cash register just waiting to ring up customers should they return. The former Huber’s Hofbrau in Mamaroneck, N.Y. — which includes living quarters that are equally appealing to lovers of retro style — is ready for a new owner for the first time since it opened.

Joseph A. H. Huber debuted his hofbrau in the two-story brick building on the market at 370 Mamaroneck Avenue in 1932 and the business would be handed down to the next generation and stay in operation through the 1990s. After shuttering, it remained in family hands, a lovingly maintained, but closed, business on the village’s central commercial strip.

2. A Dobbs Ferry Stone Cottage With Hudson River Views, Yours for $1.649 Million

Its location along the Hudson River, appealing stone facade and an interior filled with details make this Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., house attractive on its own, and a connection with a determined woman who pursued a medical degree in the 19th century adds an intriguing layer of history.

The home on the market at 63 Chestnut Street is one of a group of three stone houses that date to the early 20th century and were built on land that was once part of the David Ogden Bradley estate.

1. A Petite 18th Century Stone House Packed With Charm in Piermont, Yours for Under $550K

There are lots of historical caveats given with this property: It’s possibly the oldest house in Piermont, N.Y., possibly a former tavern and, naturally for a house of this vintage, George Washington is rumored to have visited. No matter what is fact or fiction, what is clear is that the 18th century stone structure has charm a-plenty with wide plank wood floors, beamed ceilings and working fireplaces.

While Piermont is perched along the Hudson River, the house on the market at 272 Piermont Avenue is near another body of water that played an important role in the development of the town, the Sparkill Creek. The creek provided power to the early commercial efforts of the town, and a gristmill and shop were operating here before the Revolutionary War. This old section of Piermont, including the Piermont Avenue house, is in the Rockland Road Bridge National Register Historic District.
