Brighton Beach Jitterbug-Era House With Vintage Kitchens, Deco Baths, Garage Asks $999K

There’s no denying this 1940s brick house in Brighton Beach needs some work, but for those able to see the potential charm, it has an eye-popping array of vintage features, including scalloped kitchen cabinets and colorful bathrooms.

At 47 Brighton 11th Street, it sits within walking distance of both the boardwalk at Brighton Beach and the Holocaust Memorial Park at the entrance to Sheepshead Bay.

It is one of a row of semi-detached tapestry brick two-family houses with peak-front gables, garages on the lower level and brick steps up to the owner’s unit on the top floor. A certificate of occupancy shows the house was completed in 1941.

Still extant are two kitchens with intact original tile and cabinets, retro pink and blue baths, and the arched doorways and niches typical of the period. The top floor owner’s unit has three bedrooms while the lower unit has two.

Both apartments have living rooms with wood floors, niches with shelves and arched openings that lead to a dining nook. In the upper unit the dining space has wood floors and another niche while in the unit below the linoleum floor is in rough shape. But the original built-in corner cabinets with scalloped trim are still in place.

Both kitchens have their original square white wall tiles with border tiles and triangular accent wall tiles rendered in black in the upper unit and blue in the lower. They also have wall-mounted faucets, wood cabinets with scalloped trim and some original hardware. The lower unit has a vintage stove.

Each apartment has one full bath with blue fixtures, built-in showers and pink wall tiles with blue border tiles. The upper bath has lost its original sink and has a white pedestal replacement while the lower bath has the original blue sink on chrome legs and a period medicine cabinet above. That bathroom also appears to have its original floor, which repeats the color scheme with pink mosaic tiles and blue accents.

The upper level has an outdoor terrace in the front and a sun porch at the rear with steps down to the paved rear yard. The latter has two small planting beds set amidst the concrete along with room for dining and some potted plants to brighten the space. The one-car built-in garage faces the front, where there is also a short driveway.

Gregory Tsougranis of Keller Williams has the listing and the house is priced at $999,000. Worth the ask?
