Brooklynites who have been busy nurturing their green thumbs over the last year will have a chance to show off their skills and beautify their blocks with the return of the Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest. The annual contest didn’t take place last summer but is returning this year with a socially distanced competition focused on window boxes.
Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s flower-filled competition is open to residential and commercial blocks in the borough and there is still plenty of room for creativity in what actually qualifies as a window box. Any containers that are “window-boxed sized” are eligible, according to the rules, and they do not need to be placed on a windowsill to qualify.
A representative of a block or merchant association, or even an informal group, must enter their block in the competition by June 1 to participate. Neighbors then have until July 18 to share the best photos of their botanical creations. Some of the updated categories this year include best overall in residential, best overall in commercial, most window boxes on a single block, best seniors’, best children’s and best indoor window box.
For all the rules and eligible categories check out the contest page online.
