This Bushwick railroad apartment dates to the 1890s and still retains some original details to give it a bit of charm. It’s on the first floor of a six-unit building at 354 Menahan Street, just a short walk to the Myrtle-Wyckoff train station.

Historic maps shows the three-story building dates to between 1888 and 1898, when the street would have been known as Ralph; the name was changed to Menahan Street in 1912. While the front facade has been sided for decades, the historic tax photo shows the multi-family wood-frame building once had elaborate carved door hoods, lintels and a polychrome cornice.

The front facade may have been altered but there’s still some 19th century detailing on the interior of this unit, and the original layout is intact. A 1902 I-card sketch of the floor plan shows the units in the building set up with a living room facing the street, a kitchen at the rear and two windowless bedrooms in the middle. This apartment still retains the interior window openings and transoms that were meant to allow light and air to reach those inner bedrooms. Because of the layout, the apartment doesn’t make for an ideal share, but could work as a flexible one-bedroom with a home office.

Original features include high ceilings, wood floors, a mantel and ceiling medallion in the living room, and a built-in china cabinet in the kitchen. The kitchen also has a tin ceiling, cabinets and a sink tucked into an archway, room for stool seating at an island and a rear door to the shared backyard. The single full bath is located off the kitchen.

The apartment is listed with Jennifer Bocian and Alex Gandelman of Compass and is asking $2,200 a month. The listing notes it is available as of November 1, pets are welcome and there’s no fee. Worth the rent?
