There are some intriguing glimpses of period details in the listing photos and enough information to make it clear that this 1890s Bed Stuy row house is in need of a buyer with deep pockets and an appreciation for its many intact original features. The legal two-family at 255 Stuyvesant Avenue hasn’t changed hands since the 1970s and the listing notes that it is being sold “as is” with violations.

The three-story angled-bay house is one of a row completed by 1893 by prolific builder E. H. Bishop. That year he advertised the stretch of houses as having “beautifully carved circular and octagonal bay fronts” and interiors that included hardwoods, onyx fireplaces, “electric gas lighting” and tiled bathrooms.

Set up with an owner’s triplex and a top floor rental, the listing photos focus a bit more on those woodwork details than they do full room views. The entry has plenty of woodwork with an original stair and fretwork, but the floor and stair treads have been covered with linoleum tiles. The parlor floor holds front and rear parlors, both with bay windows, and the floor plan shows the rear parlor includes built-ins. The floor plans also indicate three mantels in the house, but the listing notes there are five to be found.

The kitchen isn’t shown, but is located in its traditional spot at the rear of the garden floor, and the listing notes there is an intact butler’s pantry between it and the street-facing dining room. There’s a full bath in the mudroom extension, one of 3.5 baths in the house.

The second floor has two bedrooms, and the large street-facing one is shown with interior shutters, a wood mantel and a bed niche. The full bath needs some TLC but it has some period details, including a notable marble sink set into original built-ins, walls covered in bead board and a cast iron tub.

On the top floor, the rental has two bedrooms, one at front and one at back, and a kitchen in the center of the unit.

No views show the rear yard but it is described as “reminiscent of an English Garden” and a satellite view does show a bit of greenery.

Both DOB and ECB electrical violations exist on the property. According to the listing, the seller will pay the fines but not any costs to have the work corrected. The property will be delivered vacant.

It is listed with Gloria Sandiford of Flateau Realty Corp. and priced at $2.5 million. What do you think?
