With a complete interior renovation by architects Baxt Ingui, this Brooklyn Heights brownstone offers up a bit of contrast on the interior, from a high-ceilinged Italianate detail-filled parlor to a wood-clad rustic retreat on the top floor.

In the Brooklyn Heights Historic District, the 25-foot wide townhouse at 141 State Street dates to the late 1850s according to the LPC Landmarks Map. This is in keeping with some of the Anglo-Italianate-style details on the exterior like the arched windows. The doorhood has lost some of the original details seen in the historic tax photo but maintains an arched pediment.

The brownstone was a House of the Day back in 2011 and after selling for $4.1 million the new owners started the renovation. The legal two-family has a garden unit, or guest suite if used as a single family, and four floors of living space above.

That includes a parlor level with wide planked floorboards, marble mantels, ceiling medallions and plasterwork in the double parlors. The kitchen is in an extension at the rear of the floor and has a wall of glass and a skylight illuminating the wood cabinets and marble countertops.

The floor above has been turned into an almost full-floor bedroom suite with a sitting room, en-suite bath, walk-in closet and access to a terrace. Both sitting room and bedroom have mantels as do two of the three bedrooms on the fourth floor.

A family room has been crafted out of the space in the attic, with exposed brick, a wood-clad ceiling and a wood burning fireplace. The surround for the central stair’s restored stained glass skylight makes a rather large statement in the room. A metal staircase leads up to a roof deck.

For the wine connoisseur, the cellar includes bottle storage set into the stone and brick walls. According to the listing the climate-controlled room has space for about 1,500 bottles.

The house was on the market in 2020 priced at $11.75 million. After some price cuts, it is back on the market with Ravi Kantha, Matthew Lesser, Gian Mitchell and Cameron LeCates of Leslie J. Garfield at $8.995 million. What do you think?
