One long-ago resident of this tiny carriage house-filled Brooklyn street claimed the location “inspires goodness in children.” While it’s not clear if that 1940s wisdom about Hunts Lane holds true, the picturesque spot does still have plenty of charm, and a rare rental on the market that isn’t sky high in price. While this one isn’t overflowing with period details, it does offer two bedrooms, wood floors, a decorative mantel and the added attraction of no fee.

It is on the second floor of 9 Hunts Lane, a modest two-story 19th century brick structure that has lost its wide carriage house doors on the first floor but retains the scale of the other former horse abodes on the street. A 1922 certificate of occupancy shows that the building was converted to accommodate horsepower of a different kind before eventually becoming fully converted for residential use — a fairly typical change in the life of a carriage house transitioning to the modern age.

The bucolic little lane pops up frequently in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle in the early 20th century, in reports of residents objecting to the lane being called an alley and descriptions of it as a beauty spot for artists. The 1940s article referenced earlier describes the happiness of its children in a location that “is Bohemian without being offensive” with “the pleasantest aspects of Greenwich Village in the old days with none of its tawdriness.”

The two-bedroom unit has an open-plan living room and kitchen with a peninsula separating the two. The living room has an exposed brick wall and a decorative fireplace along with parquet floors with an inlaid border. There’s a step up into a windowed kitchen, which has tile floors, wood cabinets and a dishwasher.

Both bedrooms have wood floors, closets with sliding wood doors, baseboard heat and ceiling fans. One has an exposed brick wall.

The bathroom has white fixtures and gray and white wall tile.
