Longtime Fort Greene grocery staple Greene Grape Provisions reopened Thursday, December 1, prompting congratulations and sighs of relief on Instagram. The boutique grocer had unexpectedly closed in August after uncovering a structural issue with the building at 767 Fulton Street that prompted the Department of Buildings to issue a vacate order August 3.

A section of the rear wall had separated from the three-story brick building and was in a “severe state of disrepair,” according to the DOB. Floors on two levels in the rear were sagging and sloping toward the rear wall.

The shop was completely emptied out and gutted to make repairs to the building, which took several months. A visit Sunday during the World Cup revealed everything is back in place.

One of the most expensive grocery options in the borough, the popular and always busy boutique business carries organic produce and has a butcher counter, prepared foods and a cheese counter. The business began as a wine shop, The Greene Grape, and grew into a mini empire up and down Fulton Street that at various times included a cafe and ice creamery.
