Brooklynites can learn more about recommended changes to New York City property taxes and share their opinions at a virtual public hearing this week.

The New York City Advisory Commission on Property Tax Reform released its preliminary report in January of 2020 with 10 recommendations on reforming the city’s current property tax system. Virtual public hearings are being held in each borough, giving property owners the opportunity to provide feedback on the proposed changes. The hearings kicked off earlier this month in Staten Island, and Brooklynites are scheduled to be heard on Thursday, May 27 at 6 p.m.

Some of the proposals include raising taxes on one- to three-family houses in areas that have recently shot up in value, such as central Brooklyn, as well as reclassifying and lowering taxes on rental buildings with 10 or fewer units.

In order to testify, members of the public must register at least 24 hours in advance of the hearing. Submitting written testimony, which will be read by commission members during the hearing, is highly encouraged.

For more information on how to register to testify or to submit your written testimony check out the instructions online.
