Frank Lloyd Wright’s Armstrong House in Indiana Now Available for $1.2M

At some point in his career, Frank Lloyd Wright strayed over the Illinois border and started designing houses in the neighboring state of Indiana.

The Hoosier State lays claim to seven Wright-designed sites, all private residences.

One of those rare seven—a Usonian-style home in Ogden Dunes, IN—is now on the hunt for a buyer. Known as the Andrew F.H. Armstrong House, the residence is on the market for $1,195,000.

Measuring 3,669 square feet, the four-bedroom, four-bathroom property is being sold as is—which is usually a bad sign. However, the listing notes that the home “has been meticulously maintained” and that it has multiple elements of Wright’s signature aesthetic, for which it would be difficult to find a comparable.

It was built in 1939 into a slight slope on the wooded property and, thanks to the efforts of the most recent owner, appears to be in excellent condition.

There are two fireplaces, an expansive living room, a carport, numerous built-ins, red-brick exterior walls, mahogany board-and-batten walls, and banks of windows in every room.

According to an article in Dwell, the home changed hands a number of times before it was redesigned and expanded in the 1960s.

The work was overseen by John Howe, a former Taliesin architect whose time overlapped with Wright’s. Changes included a new screened-in porch, two additional bedrooms, an expanded kitchen, a new family room, and a new, four-car detached garage. The new owner even built furnishings in Wright’s style.

The two-story home sits on multiple wooded lots that total over half an acre. Multiple terraces allow an owner to soak in the natural beauty surrounding the home.

Other hard-to-find amenities include a sauna, a screened-in porch, and a recreation room ideal for entertaining. The home is only a couple of blocks from the shores of Lake Michigan.
